Powers 360° Leadership Assessment
Measuring the four universal leadership competencies for global leadership development

Overview
The Powers 360° Leadership Assessment is a rich web-based diagnostic and planning tool that measures the four leadership competencies for global leadership development. It is for organizations with a local or international presence committed to developing individual leaders and teams of leaders at all levels of an organization.

In the past five years, we have entered a global economy that now requires organizations to have qualified leaders of a higher caliber who have strong character and are culturally savvy. On top of that, our leadership demographics are changing. Nearly 35% of senior leaders in most organizations are retiring baby boomers and the next younger generation of leaders are fewer in numbers and largely undeveloped.

The urgent question now is how to accelerate and sustain the process of growing and maturing your leaders so that absence of talent is not an impediment to your business or to a sustainable world economy.

What does it measure?
The Powers 360° Leadership Assessment measures the following four leadership competencies:

1. Leader
Measures the degree of engaging presence, skillful communication and responsible action. Measures a leader’s ability to serve as a role model by demonstrating right use of power, taking a stand on critical issues, and providing service.

2. Visionary
Measures the degree of authenticity, personal integrity and the ability to tell the truth without blame or judgment. Measures the ability to lead change, resolve conflict, champion creativity and innovation, and inspire others with a passionate, sustainable vision.

3. Relationship Builder
Measures the ability to relate respectfully with an open heart, manage and relate with one’s emotions, and to have healthy self-esteem. Measures the ability to motivate others with genuine appreciation, develop a unified culture where people are highly engaged and productive, and cultivate loyal sustainable relationships with people and the environment.

4. Mentor
Measures the ability to clearly see the potential in others, provide resources and opportunities for others to excel, and deliver effective coaching and feedback. Measures objectivity, wisdom, flexibility, and the ability to be open to outcome, not attached to outcome. Measures the ability to demonstrate discernment, judgment, and business knowledge.

How does it work?
The Powers 360° Leadership Assessment is a comprehensive, in-depth tool used to quickly and visibly strengthen the impact of one leader or a team of leaders upon their organization. It can be used internationally and with different generations of leaders. There are three parts:

1)   A web-based survey with four major competency domains and 12 sub-domains – three for each of the four domains – with more than 100 behavioral statements. Approximately 7-10 people, selected by the leader and their manager, complete the Assessment, rating the leader on the frequency with which they think they demonstrate each behavior. Respondents indicate their relationship to the leader – self, manager, peer, direct report, or customer – and all feedback is anonymous. The survey can be customized to guarantee a good strategic fit with an organization’s culture. It is easy to understand and takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

2)   Personal interviews of 5-6 respondents provide a deeper, second dimension necessary in generating a well-rounded profile of the leader or team of leaders. The interviews are done by phone or face-to-face, are confidential, and take one hour to complete.

3)   A detailed report is generated that specifically describes the results of the assessment process. It uses easy-to-read statistics, graphs and narrative to describe strengths, areas needing improvement, specific short and long-term recommendations, and strategies for moving forward. When a full leadership team is assessed, additional statistics and graphs compare individual and team results.

What do you do with the results?
The results are compiled into an easy to read, comprehensive final report that is used to:

1)    Debrief in depth with the leader(s) and manager about the results of the assessment

2)    Plan the coaching strategy, benchmark the leader’s current level of competency, and develop metrics for change

3)    Launch the coaching process to achieve specific, tangible breakthroughs and measurable results.

Unlike many other processes where a final report sits in a drawer unused, this report is a living document that structures the leader’s progress. It is used to sustain the growth of your talent management and guarantee that the next generation of leaders is ready when you need them.

What is it based on?
The Powers 360° Leadership Assessment is based on 30 years of cross-cultural, anthropologic research conducted by Angeles Arrien, Ph.D. that is used in corporate business and public sectors in more than 11 countries around the world. The research is human-centric, bridging psychology and cultural anthropology, and reveals universal themes and archetypes that are profoundly useful in improving our ability to work cooperatively and creatively as leaders and teams. Dr. Arrien’s research is compiled in her body of work called The Four Fold Way. Her research is used with permission as the foundation for the Powers 360° Leadership Assessment.
